What is a Monteurzimmer?

Short answer

A Monteurzimmer is a simple room rented to fitters, installers and other workers on a job away from home, usually per bed per night, with a shared kitchen and parking. It is the most common term for workers’ accommodation in Germany and Austria.

What does the word mean?

“Monteur” is German for a fitter or installer; a Monteurzimmer is a room for one. In practice the word covers any simple accommodation for people working away from home: rooms in a private house, a guesthouse, or a building fitted out for crews.

A whole flat for a small team, with its own kitchen.
Monteurunterkunft
The general word: any accommodation for workers.
Arbeiterunterkunft
Workers’ accommodation, used for larger buildings and groups.

What can you expect?

  • A bed, a wardrobe and a table; often two single beds per room.
  • A shared kitchen, sometimes a washing machine.
  • Parking for vans, often in front of the building.
  • A price per bed per night, with lower rates for longer stays.
  • An invoice for the company, with VAT shown.

Standards vary a lot, from spotless to tired. Ask for photos of the actual rooms and the list in what to ask before you book.

Where is demand highest?

Demand follows industry and construction: around large sites, ports and factories. There is a city guide for the German cities where crews most often need beds, with the areas that have the most places to stay: Munich, Hamburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Hanover.

How do you find one for a whole crew?

Listing sites show many small providers with a few rooms each. For 20 or 40 people that means a lot of calls. Workbeds contacts the providers around your site for you and returns their answers as comparable offers, including partial ones that together house the whole crew.

Do Monteurzimmer have to register guests?

Is a Monteurzimmer the same as a hostel?

No. A hostel mainly serves tourists; a Monteurzimmer is set up for workers, with parking, early departures and longer stays.
